Punctually at midday he opened his bag and spread out his professional equipment,

which consisted of a dozen cowrie shells, a square piece of cloth with obscure mystic charts on it,

It was a remarkable place in many ways: a surging crowd was always moving up and down this narrow road morning till night.

A variety of trades and occupations was represented all along its way: medicine sellers, sellers of stolen hardware and junk, magicians and, above all, an auctioneer of cheap cloth, who created enough din all day to attract the whole town.

Next to him in vociferousness came a vendor of fried groundnuts, who gave his ware a fancy name each day, calling it Bombay Ice Cream one day, and on the next Delhi Almond, and on the third Raja’s Delicacy, and so on and so forth, and people flocked to him.

The astrologer transacted his business by the light of a flare which crackled and smoked up above the groundnut heap nearby.

It was a bewildering criss cross of light rays and moving shadows.

This suited the astrologer very well, for the simple reason that he had not in the least intended to be an astrologer when he began life;

He charged three pice per question and never opened his mouth till the other had spoken for at least ten minutes, which provided him enough stuff for a dozen answers and advices.

When he told the person before him, gazing at his palm, “In many ways you are not getting the fullest results for your efforts,” nine out of ten were disposed to agree with him.

Or he gave an analysis of character: “Most of your troubles are due to your nature. How can you be otherwise with Saturn where he is? You have an impetuous nature and a rough exterior.”

This endeared him to their hearts immediately, for even the mildest of us loves to think that he has a forbidding exterior.

This was a signal for the astrologer to bundle up too, since it left him in darkness except for a little shaft of green light which strayed in from somewhere and touched the ground before him.

The other grumbled some vague reply.

The astrologer pressed his invitation; whereupon the other thrust his palm under his nose, saying: “You call yourself an astrologer?”
জ্যোতিষী তার আমন্ত্রণ জোরালো করলেন; এর পরেই অন্যজন তার হাতের তালু তার নাকের নিচে ঠেলে দিয়ে বললেন: “আপনি নিজেকে জ্যোতিষী বলেন?”
The astrologer felt challenged and said, tilting the other’s palm towards the green shaft of light: “Yours is a nature…”
জ্যোতিষী চ্যালেঞ্জ অনুভব করলেন এবং অন্যজনের হাতের তালু সবুজ আলোর শিখার দিকে কাত করে বললেন: “আপনার স্বভাব...”
“Oh, stop that,” the other said. “Tell me something worthwhile….”
“ওহ, এটা বন্ধ করুন,” অন্যজন বললেন। “আমাকে কিছু গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বলুন….”
Our friend felt piqued.
আমাদের বন্ধু কিছুটা বিরক্ত হলেন।
“I charge only three pice per question, and what you get ought to be good enough for your money….”
“আমি প্রতি প্রশ্নের জন্য মাত্র তিন পয়সা চার্জ করি, এবং আপনি যে উত্তর পাবেন তা আপনার টাকার জন্য যথেষ্ট ভালো হওয়া উচিত….”
At this the other withdrew his arm, took out an anna and flung it out to him, saying, “I have some questions to ask. If I prove you are bluffing, you must return that anna to me with interest.”
এতে অন্যজন তার হাত সরিয়ে নিয়ে একটি আনা বের করে তার দিকে ছুঁড়ে দিয়ে বললেন, “আমার কিছু প্রশ্ন আছে। যদি প্রমাণ করতে পারি যে আপনি ধোঁকা দিচ্ছেন, তবে আপনাকে সেই আনা সুদ সহ আমাকে ফেরত দিতে হবে।”
“If you find my answers satisfactory, will you give me five rupees?”
“যদি আমার উত্তরে সন্তুষ্ট হন, তাহলে কি আমাকে পাঁচ টাকা দেবেন?”
“No.”
“না।”
“Or will you give me eight annas?”
“অথবা আমাকে আট আনা দেবেন?”
“All right, provided you give me twice as much if you are wrong,” said the stranger.
“ঠিক আছে, যদি তুমি ভুল প্রমাণিত হও তবে আমাকে দ্বিগুণ দেবে,” বলল আগন্তুক।
This pact was accepted after a little further argument.

The astrologer sent up a prayer to heaven as the other lit a cheroot.

The astrologer caught a glimpse of his face by the matchlight.

There was a pause as cars hooted on the road, jutka drivers swore at their horses and the babble of the crowd agitated the semi-darkness of the park.
রাস্তায় গাড়ির হর্ন, জুটকা চালকদের ঘোড়াগুলোর প্রতি শাপ-শাপান্ত, এবং পার্কের আধো অন্ধকারে জনতার গুঞ্জন এক বিরতি সৃষ্টি করল।
The other sat down, sucking his cheroot, puffing out, sat there ruthlessly.
অন্যজন চুরুট টেনে, ধোঁয়া ছেড়ে, নিষ্ঠুরভাবে সেখানে বসে রইল।
The astrologer felt very uncomfortable.
জ্যোতিষী খুব অস্বস্তি অনুভব করলেন।
“Here, take your anna back. I am not used to such challenges. It is late for me today….”
“এই নাও, তোমার আনা ফেরত নাও। আমি এমন চ্যালেঞ্জের সাথে অভ্যস্ত নই। আজ আমার দেরি হয়ে গেছে…।”
He made preparations to bundle up.
তিনি জিনিসপত্র গুছিয়ে নিতে শুরু করলেন।
The other held his wrist and said, “You can’t get out of it now. You dragged me in while I was passing.”
অন্যজন তার কব্জি ধরে বলল, “তুমি এখন আর এখান থেকে পালাতে পারবে না। তুমি আমায় এখানে টেনেছ যখন আমি যাচ্ছিলাম।”
The astrologer shivered in his grip; and his voice shook and became faint.
জ্যোতিষী তার গ্রিপে কেঁপে উঠলেন; এবং তার কণ্ঠ কাঁপল এবং ম্লান হয়ে গেল।
“Leave me today. I will speak to you tomorrow.”
“আজ আমাকে যেতে দাও। আমি তোমার সাথে কাল কথা বলব।”
The other thrust his palm in his face and said, “Challenge is challenge. Go on.”
অন্যজন তার মুখের সামনে তার হাতের তালু ঠেলে দিয়ে বলল, “চ্যালেঞ্জ তো চ্যালেঞ্জ। চালিয়ে যাও।”
The astrologer proceeded with his throat drying up. “There is a woman…”
জ্যোতিষী শুকনো গলায় এগিয়ে গেলেন। “একজন নারী আছে…”
“Stop,” said the other. “I don’t want all that. Shall I succeed in my present search or not? Answer this and go. Otherwise I will not let you go till you disgorge all your coins.”
“থামো,” অন্যজন বলল। “এসব আমি চাই না। আমি আমার বর্তমান খোঁজে সফল হব কি না? এর উত্তর দাও এবং চলে যাও। না হলে তোমার সব কয়েন না পাওয়া পর্যন্ত আমি তোমাকে যেতে দেব না।”
The astrologer muttered a few incantations and replied, “All right. I will speak. But will you give me a rupee if what I say is convincing? Otherwise I will not open my mouth, and you may do what you like.”
জ্যোতিষী কয়েকটি মন্ত্র উচ্চারণ করে উত্তর দিলেন, “ঠিক আছে। আমি বলব। কিন্তু আমি যা বলব তা যদি বিশ্বাসযোগ্য হয় তবে তুমি কি আমাকে এক টাকা দেবে? না হলে আমি মুখ খুলব না, তুমি যা খুশি করতে পার।”
After a good deal of haggling the other agreed.
অনেক দর কষাকষির পর অন্যজন রাজি হলেন।
The astrologer said, “You were left for dead. Am I right?”
জ্যোতিষী বললেন, “তোমাকে মৃত ভেবে ফেলে রেখে যাওয়া হয়েছিল। আমি কি ঠিক বলছি?”
Ah, tell me more.”
“একদম। আরও কিছু বলুন।”
“A knife has passed through you once?”
said the astrologer.
“একটা ছুরি আপনাকে বিদ্ধ করেছিল একবার?” জ্যোতিষী জানতে চাইলেন।

“Good fellow!” He bared his chest to show the scar.
“ভালো মানুষ!” তিনি তার বুক উন্মুক্ত করে ক্ষতচিহ্নটি দেখালেন।

“What else?”
“আর কি?”
---
“And then you were pushed into a well nearby in the field. You were left for dead.”
“তারপর আপনাকে মাঠের পাশে একটি কুয়োতে ঠেলে ফেলে দেওয়া হয়েছিল। আপনাকে মৃত অবস্থায় ফেলে রাখা হয়েছিল।”

“I should have been dead if some passerby had not chanced to peep into the well,” exclaimed the other, overwhelmed by enthusiasm.
“আমি মারা যেতাম যদি কিছু পথচারী কুয়োতে উঁকি না দিত,” অপর ব্যক্তি উত্তেজনায় অভিভূত হয়ে চিৎকার করে বলল।

“When shall I get at him?” he asked, clenching his fist.
“আমি কখন তার কাছে পৌঁছাতে পারব?” তিনি মুঠি বেঁধে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন।

“In the next world,” answered the astrologer.
“পরবর্তী জগতে,” জ্যোতিষী উত্তর দিলেন।

“He died four months ago in a far-off town. You will never see any more of him.”
“সে চার মাস আগে একটি দূরবর্তী শহরে মারা গেছে। আপনি তাকে আর কখনও দেখতে পাবেন না।”

The other groaned on hearing it.
এটা শুনে অপর ব্যক্তি দীর্ঘশ্বাস ফেলল।

The astrologer proceeded.
জ্যোতিষী এগিয়ে গেলেন।

“Guru Nayak”
“গুরু নায়েক….”
“You know my name!” the other said, taken aback.”
লোকটা অবাক হয়ে বললেন, “আপনি আমার নাম জানেন !

“As I know all other things. Guru Nayak, listen carefully to what I have to say.
“যেমন আমি অন্যান্য সব কিছু জানি। গুরু নায়ক, আমার কথা মনোযোগ দিয়ে শুনুন।
---
Your village is two days’ journey due north of this town.
আপনার গ্রাম এই শহর থেকে উত্তরে দুই দিনের পথ।
---
Take the next train and be gone.
পরবর্তী ট্রেন ধরে চলে যান।
---
I see once again great danger to your life if you go from home.”
আমি আবারও দেখি যে আপনি যদি বাড়ি থেকে যান তবে আপনার জীবনে বড় বিপদ আছে।”

He took and out a pinch of sacred ash and held it out to him.
তিনি পবিত্র ছাইয়ের একটি চিমটি নিয়ে তার দিকে ধরলেন।

“Rub it on your forehead and go home. Never travel southward again, you will live to be a hundred.”

“Why should I leave home again?” the other said reflectively.

“I was only going away now and then to look for him and to choke out his life if I met him.”
“আমি মাঝে মাঝে কেবল তাকে খুঁজতে বের হতাম এবং তাকে পেলে তার জীবন শেষ করে দিতাম।”

He shook his head regretfully.
তিনি দুঃখের সাথে মাথা নাড়লেন।

“He has escaped my hands. I hope at least he died as he deserved.”
“সে আমার হাত থেকে পালিয়ে গেছে। আমি আশা করি অন্তত সে যেমন মরার উপযুক্ত ছিল তেমনই মারা গেছে।”

“Yes,” said the astrologer.
“হ্যাঁ,” জ্যোতিষী বললেন।

“He was crushed under a lorry.”
“সে একটি লরির নিচে চাপা পড়েছিল।”

The other looked gratified to hear it.
এটা শুনে অপর ব্যক্তি সন্তুষ্ট মনে হলো।

The place was deserted by the time the astrologer picked up his articles and put them into his bag.
জ্যোতিষী তার জিনিসপত্র তুলে ব্যাগে রাখার সময় জায়গাটি জনশূন্য ছিল।

The green shaft was also gone, leaving the place in darkness and silence.

The stranger had gone off into the night, after giving the astrologer a handful of coins.

তিনি কয়েনগুলো তার দিকে ছুঁড়ে দিয়ে বললেন, “গণনা কর। একজন লোক সব দিয়েছে।”

“Twelve and a half annas,” she said, counting.
“বারো আনা দেড় পাই,” তিনি গুনে বললেন।

She was overjoyed.

“I can buy some jaggery and coconut tomorrow. The child has been asking for sweets for so many days now.

I will prepare some nice stuff for her.”

“The swine has cheated me! He promised me a rupee,” said the astrologer.
“সেটা প্রতারক আমাকে ঠকিয়েছে! সে আমাকে একটি রুপি দেওয়ার প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছিল,” জ্যোতিষী বললেন।

She looked up at him.

“You look worried. What is wrong?”
“তুমি চিন্তিত দেখাচ্ছ। কি হয়েছে?”

After dinner, sitting on the pyol, he told her,

“Do you know a great load is gone from me today?
“তুমি জানো, আজ আমার বুক থেকে একটা বড় বোঝা নেমে গেছে?

I thought I had the blood of a man on my hands all these years.
আমি ভেবেছিলাম এত বছর ধরে আমার হাতে একজন মানুষের রক্ত আছে।
