 1. "Once on a time there lived a poor Brahman, who not being a Kulin, found it the hardest thing in the world to get married."

2. "He went to rich people and begged of them to give him money that he might marry a wife."

3. "And a large sum of money was needed, not so much for the expenses of the wedding, as for giving to the parents of the bride."

17. "After some years the Brahman returned from his travels; and what was his surprise when he found another like him in the house."

18. "The ghost said to the Brahman- 'Who are you? what business have you to come to my house?'"

বাংলা: ভূত ব্রাহ্মণকে বলল— 'তুমি কে? আমার বাড়িতে আসার অধিকার তোমার কী?'

19. "'Who am I?' replied the Brahman, 'let me ask who you are. This is my house; that is my mother, and this is my wife.' "

বাংলা: 'আমি কে?' ব্রাহ্মণ উত্তর দিলেন, 'তোমার কাছে বরং জানতে চাই তুমি কে। এটি আমার বাড়ি; ওই আমার মা, আর এটি আমার স্ত্রী।'

20. "The ghost said— 'Why herein is a strange thing. Every one knows that this is my house, that is my wife, and yonder is my mother; and I have lived here for years.'"

22. "So saying the ghost drove away the Brahman from his house."

23. "The Brahman became mute with wonder. He did not know what to do."

বাংলা: ব্রাহ্মণ অবাক হয়ে নির্বাক হয়ে গেলেন। তিনি কী করবেন বুঝতে পারলেন না।

24. "At last he bethought himself of going to the king and of laying his case before him."

বাংলা: শেষমেশ তিনি ভাবলেন রাজা কাছে গিয়ে তার সমস্যা জানাবেন।

25. "The king saw the ghost-Brahman as well as the Brahman, and the one was the picture of the other; so he was in a fix, and did not know how to decide the quarrel."

বাংলা: রাজা ভূত-ব্রাহ্মণ এবং ব্রাহ্মণ দুজনকেই দেখলেন, এবং দুজনই একই রকম হওয়ায় তিনি সমস্যায় পড়লেন ও ঝগড়ার সমাধান করতে পারলেন না।

26. "Day after day the Brahman went to the king and besought him to give him back his house, his wife, and his mother; and the king, not knowing what to say every time, put him off to the following day."

বাংলা: দিন দিন ব্রাহ্মণ রাজার কাছে গিয়ে তার বাড়ি, স্ত্রী, এবং মা ফেরত চাইলেন; আর রাজা কিছু বলার মতো না পেয়ে প্রতিবার পরের দিনের কথা বললেন।

27. "Every day the king tells him to— 'Come to-morrow'; and every day the Brahman goes away from the palace weeping and striking his forehead with the palm of his hand."

বাংলা: প্রতিদিন রাজা বলতেন— 'আগামীকাল আসো'; আর প্রতিদিন ব্রাহ্মণ প্রাসাদ থেকে কাঁদতে কাঁদতে কপালে হাত দিয়ে চলে যেতেন।

28. "And saying- 'What a wicked world this is! I am driven from my own house, and another fellow has taken possession of my house and of my wife!'"

বাংলা: তিনি বলতেন— 'কী নিষ্ঠুর এই দুনিয়া! আমি নিজের বাড়ি থেকে তাড়ানো হয়েছি, আর অন্য কেউ আমার বাড়ি ও স্ত্রী দখল করে নিয়েছে!'

29. "And what a king this is! He does not do justice."

বাংলা: 'আর রাজা কেমন! তিনি ন্যায়বিচার করেন না।'

30. Now, it came to pass that as the Brahman went away every day from the court outside the town, he passed a spot at which a great many cowboys used to play.

31. They let the cows graze on the meadow, while they themselves met together under a large tree to play.

32. And they played at royalty. One cowboy was elected king; another, prime minister or vizier; another, kotwal, or prefect of the police; and others, constables.

33. Every day for several days together they saw the Brahman passing by weeping.

34. One day the cowboy king asked his vizier whether he knew why the Brahman wept every day.

একদিন রাখাল রাজা তার মন্ত্রীকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন যে তিনি জানেন কিনা কেন ব্রাহ্মণ প্রতিদিন কাঁদেন।

35. On the vizier not being able to answer the question, the cowboy king ordered one of his constables to bring the Brahman to him.

36. One of them went and said to the Brahman, “The king requires your immediate attendance.”

37. The Brahman replied, “What for? I have just come from the king, and he put me off till to-morrow. Why does he want me again?”

ব্রাহ্মণ জবাব দিলেন, “কেন? আমি তো এখনই রাজা থেকে এসেছি, আর তিনি আমাকে কাল আসতে বলেছেন। তিনি আবার কেন ডাকছেন?”

38. “It is our king that wants you-our neat-herd king,” rejoined the constable.

“আমাদের রাজা আপনাকে চান—আমাদের রাখাল রাজা,” উত্তর দিল কনস্টেবল।

39. “Who is neat-herd king?” asked the Brahman.

“রাখাল রাজা কে?” ব্রাহ্মণ জিজ্ঞেস করলেন।

40. “Come and see,” was the reply.

“এসে দেখুন,” ছিল উত্তর।

41. The neat-herd king then asked the Brahman why he every day went away weeping.

রাখাল রাজা তখন ব্রাহ্মণকে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন কেন তিনি প্রতিদিন কাঁদতে কাঁদতে যান।

42. The Brahman then told him his sad story.

ব্রাহ্মণ তখন তার দুঃখের কাহিনী বললেন।

43. The neat-herd king, after hearing the whole, said, “I understand your case; I will give you again all your rights. Only go to the king and ask his permission for me to decide your case.”

রাখাল রাজা সব শুনে বললেন, “আমি আপনার বিষয় বুঝেছি; আমি আপনাকে আপনার সমস্ত অধিকার ফেরত দেব। শুধু রাজাকে গিয়ে আমার দ্বারা বিচার করার অনুমতি নিয়ে আসুন।”

44. The Brahman went back to the king of the country, and begged his Majesty to send his case to the neat-herd king, who had offered to decide it.

ব্রাহ্মণ দেশের রাজার কাছে ফিরে গেলেন এবং তার রাজকীয় মহিমার কাছে অনুরোধ করলেন যেন মামলাটি রাখাল রাজার কাছে পাঠানো হয়, যিনি এটি সমাধান করতে চেয়েছেন।

45. The king, whom the case had greatly puzzled, granted the permission sought.

46. The following morning was fixed for the trial.

47. The neat- declared by the court to be the rightful owner of the house the title of which is in dispute.”

51. “Now, let me see, which of you will enter.”

“এখন দেখাই যাক, তোমাদের মধ্যে কে এতে প্রবেশ করবে।”

52. The Brahman said, “You are a neat-herd, and your intellect is that of a neat-herd. What man can enter into such a small phial?”

ব্রাহ্মণ বলল, “তুমি একজন রাখাল, এবং তোমার বুদ্ধি রাখালের মতো। কোনো মানুষ এমন ছোট বোতলে ঢুকতে পারে নাকি?”

53. “If you cannot enter,” said the neat-herd king, “then you are not the rightful owner.”

“যদি তুমি ঢুকতে না পারো,” রাখাল রাজা বললেন, “তাহলে তুমি বৈধ মালিক নও।”

54. “What do you say, sir, to this?” turning to the ghost-Brahman and addressing him.

“আপনার কী মত, মহাশয়?” রাখাল রাজা ভূত-ব্রাহ্মণের দিকে ঘুরে বললেন।

55. “If you can enter into the phial, then the house and the wife and the mother become yours.”

“যদি আপনি বোতলে প্রবেশ করতে পারেন, তবে সেই বাড়ি, স্ত্রী এবং মা আপনার হবে।”

56. “Of course I will enter,” said the ghost.

“অবশ্যই আমি প্রবেশ করব,” ভূত বলল।

57. And true to his word, to the wonder of all, he made himself into a small creature like an insect, and entered into the phial.

তার কথা মতো, সবার বিস্ময়ের মাঝে, সে নিজেকে একটি পোকামাকড়ের মতো ছোট প্রাণীতে রূপান্তরিত করল এবং বোতলে প্রবেশ করল।

58. The neat-herd king forthwith corked up the phial, and the ghost could not get out.

59. Then, addressing the Brahman, the neat-herd king said, “Throw this phial into the bottom of the sea, and take possession of your house, wife, and mother.”

তারপর ব্রাহ্মণের দিকে তাকিয়ে রাখাল রাজা বললেন, “এই বোতলটি সাগরের গভীরে ফেলে দিন এবং আপনার বাড়ি, স্ত্রী এবং মায়ের দখল নিন।”

60. The Brahman did so, and lived happily for many years and begot sons and daughters.

ব্রাহ্মণ তাই করলেন এবং বহু বছর সুখে বসবাস করলেন ও পুত্র-কন্যার জন্ম দিলেন।

61. Here my story endeth, The Natiya-thorn withereth, etc.
